Plans are afoot to make cigarettes thirty times weaker under new strict laws designed to encourage smokers to switch over to E-cigarettes.

Officials from the UK’s Department of Health have confirmed they’ve met with representatives from the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to discuss the strategy.

Campaigners have claimed reducing nicotine in cigarettes would be ‘the most fundamental change the tobacco industry has ever seen’.

Only last month the British government proposed a ‘Tobacco Control Plan’ which laid out plans to acheive a ‘smoke free Britain’ by getting smokers to swap to e-cigarettes.

It read:

The best thing a smoker can do for their health is to quit smoking. However, the evidence is increasingly clear that e-cigarettes are significantly less harmful to health than smoking tobacco.

The government will seek to support consumers in stopping smoking and adopting the use of less harmful nicotine products.

Campaign groups have rejected the plans though claiming they doubt the move would get people to stop smoking adding that it would impact normal British people the most.

The director of the smokers group Forest said Simon Clark claimed that the idea was desperate and would lead to a black market of high nicotine cigarettes.

Other campaigners believe that the plans will confuse the public into believing that low nicotine cigarettes are better for you than normal cigarettes.

While the plans are completely hypothetical right now the Department of Health has refused to rule out the change in future.
